About Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded on January 13, 1913, by 22 collegiate women at Howard University. These students wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence and to provide assistance to persons in need. Since its founding, Delta Sigma Theta has been at the forefront of creating programming to improve political, education, and social and economic conditions. Pittsburgh Alumnae Chapter
Recognizing the need in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for a member of Delta Sigma Theta to maintain a closer affiliation with her peers in interests and achievements, Alpha Epsilon Chapter was organized on April 3, 1927. Alpha Epsilon was chartered as a mixed chapter so that graduates living in the Pittsburgh area and students of city universities such as the University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne University, Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University) and others might be able to affiliate.
The 1929 Grand Chapter session, the first biennial convention in Delta’s history was hosted by Alpha Epsilon beginning on December 27, 1929. The convention was welcomed by Chapter President, Soror Lula Howell. Twenty-five chapters were seated at this convention.
In 1946, Alpha Epsilon hosted the Midwestern Regional Convention and was the first of any fraternal group to hold its meetings in the Stephen Foster Memorial Hall of the University of Pittsburgh. The Chapter also hosted the Eastern Regional Conference in 1956, 1968, 1986, 2005, and 2016.
In January of 1971, the graduate and undergraduate members of Alpha Epsilon reorganized and chartered Pittsburgh Alumnae and Theta Beta, the city-wide undergraduate chapter. Pittsburgh Alumnae Chapter was chartered with over 100 Alpha Epsilon Sorors, through the efforts of:
