The event is certain to inspire\, enlighten\, and instill pride in readers of all ages from pre-school thru adulthood. By the end of our time together\, you will have a deeper understanding of today’s issues\, consider getting involved in making change\, and perhaps be motivated to tell your own story. \nIn the Spotlight\, our Authors are: \nSharon Flake was a 2021 finalist for one of the most prestigious awards in publishing\, The Kirkus Prize. Her novel\, The Life I’m In\, is a companion to The Skin I’m In\, a book that brought a bold dimension to literature for young readers. Now considered a modern classic\, The Skin I’m In has sold over a million copies worldwide and has been translated into numerous languages. The novel is required reading in classrooms and communities around the globe. Since its publication\, Flake has authored a dozen books\, winning multiple Coretta Scott King Honor Awards; ALA Notable and Top Ten Recommended Books citations\, and an NAACP Image Award Nomination\, among many accolades. DESCRIPTION:Beginning in February\, in honor of Black History Month\, the Pittsburgh Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta\, Inc.\, will host its second annual fundraising drive to benefit the August Wilson African American Cultural Center (AWAACC). Join us in this crucial effort to support our cultural home in Pittsburgh! \nThe campaign runs February 1\, 2022 to February 28\, 2022. \nThe D9 organization that raises the most funds during the fundraising drive will have their name prominently displayed on a plaque that will hang inside the August Wilson African American Cultural Center\, and all other participating organizations will have their names listed in recognition of their efforts. \nAll who become members to the AWAACC will have access to: \n\nExclusive benefits as an AWAACC member (benefits vary depending on giving level)\nSpecial benefits throughout the year for those who “STEPS UP” the most\nInvitation to D9 for a special celebration in December 2022 during the We Want the Funk Festival at the AWAACC\n\nLast year’s campaign raised over $20\,000 with Delta Sigma Theta raising the most!! DESCRIPTION:Register now at https://2021fagardenproject.eventbrite.com!!!\nThe Fall 2021 community flower garden pull event begins at 9:00 a.m. Garden pulls are a wonderful opportunity to get outside as the weather turns cool and prepare the gardens for winter months. The Western PA Conservancy will be planting at the Homewood/Brushton Garden located at the intersection of Frankstown and Bennett. \nAs a volunteer: \n\nYou will pulling out the annual flowers to bed down the garden for the winter.\nThe bedding down of the garden will take about 2 to 3 hours on site.\nThe Conservancy provides the decompose bags to discard the plants\, plastic gloves (though you are welcome to bring your own).\nChildren are welcome under adult supervision (planting day is not usually appropriate for children under eight).\nDress for the weather—layers if it is cool\, rain gear if it is wet\, sunscreen and hats for bright days. You will get dirty!\nWear sturdy shoes to protect your feet. There are three youth programs to choose from during our first\, Youth Program Open House: \n\nThe Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy (for girls ages 11-14)\nThe Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS Institute (for girls ages 14-18)\nEMBODI (for boys ages 10-16)\n\nThese flagship initiatives will provide: \n\nmentorship\nconnection with peers\nvolunteer work opportunities\ntools for life planning to outline personal goals for work\, school and training\n\nThe Youth Program Open House is for young people from the ages of 10 to 18\, parents/guardians\, school counselors and community partners that wish to learn more about ways to participate and be involved!
